WE ARE THE NJ STATE BBQ CHAMPIONS...YET AGAIN!
Fat Angel BBQ dominates the NJ State BBQ Championship in Wildwood, NJ with first places in Chicken and Brisket and the Overall Grand Championship award.
The 13th annual New Jersey Barbecue Competition and 11th annual Anglesea Blues Festival awarded cash prizes, trophies, plaques, and, most importantly, bragging rights to barbecue teams from across the country this past weekend.

WE ARE THE NJ STATE BBQ CHAMPIONS...AGAIN!

Jersey teams dominated the recent Que by the Sea cooking contest, which challenged teams to smoke and grill the best chicken, ribs and brisket. Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, a collective of amateur and professional outdoor chefs, the competition had nearly 50 official eaters to evaluate each dish. Meat was smoked overnight in a Seaside Heights municipal parking lot. The grand champ of the event was the Brielle-based Fat Angel team, run by a husband and wife who also operate a catering company, Local Smoke. (Video by Lisa Rose/The Star-Ledger)
For many people, summer is synonymous with entertaining family and friends outdoors and cooking over a fire in the backyard wearing a King (or Queen) of the Grill apron. Nothing gets a party started like the smell of steak, pork or shrimp wafting through the summer wind.

Kansas City, Mo., is to barbecue what Chicago is to deep-dish pizza. So imagine the reaction when an upstart team from Red Bank, N.J., crossed over the Mississippi River, slathered pork ribs with its signature sauce, and walked off with first-place honors at the 30th annual American Royal BBQ Competition.

Almost immediately after Fat Angel BBQ claimed first place for its Texas-style brisket at the National BBQ Festival in Douglas, Ga., earlier this year, the muttering started.
"Did y’all hear that Jersey won for brisket?" one Lone Star pitmaster said
to another, the "Jersey" spit out in that contemptuous tone typically reserved
for, well, how people usually talk about New Jersey.

Local Smoke BBQ announced that Uncle Robby's BBQ Smoking Woods of Elizabeth, NJ will be their exclusive supplier of BBQ wood. The two companies want to bring good down south smoked BBQ to the northeast.

Barbecue competitions may be under the radar, but there are 30 to 40 active teams in New Jersey, with names like Lo’-N-Slo’ and Up In Smoke (both from Ringoes), Southern Pride Roasters (Middlesex), and Pig Assassins (Ocean County). The 10th Annual New Jersey State Barbecue Championship, held in North Wildwood in July, drew pitmasters from Virginia to Massachusetts, plus plenty of local talent. More >>
